Bunker House, Gerringong: Inside One of Our Most Awarded Custom Luxury Homes
In 2019, we bought an empty block on what’s been named the most beautiful street in Australia, overlooking Werri Beach and the Gerringong hills. What we built there has gone on to become one of Futureflip’s most recognised and awarded custom luxury homes on the South Coast: a mid-century modern concrete home inspired by the wartime bunkers along the nearby coastline, designed to champion endurance and sustainability in equal measure.
A home built to outlast everything around it
The name isn’t just aesthetic. Bunker House was inspired directly from the World War II-era bunkers dotted along this stretch of coast, solid, low-slung, built to withstand. That same philosophy runs through the entire home: a modern brutalist concrete build we designed to last hundreds of years.
Concrete as a primary material was a sustainability decision. Concrete is durable, low-maintenance, and built for longevity, it reflects the same principle we bring to every custom home and custom duplex we design across Sydney and the South Coast: real luxury isn’t just how a home looks on day one, it’s how well it performs decades down the line.
Designing around the neighbours, not just the view
Building on one of the most sought-after streets in the country comes with a responsibility most builds don’t have to consider: everyone else’s view matters too.
Our goal was to avoid obstructing our neighbours’ views entirely, so instead of building up, we built down into the land. The back of Bunker House now sits just 3 metres above ground, tucked into the site rather than looming over it, keeping everyone on the street happy while Bunker House still gets its own uninterrupted outlook.
It’s a good example of what we think separates a genuinely custom home from a standard build, the design isn’t just solving for our own brief, it’s solving for the block, the street, and the context around it.
Every room, one view
Werri Beach is the constant thread through the home. We positioned every room in Bunker House to take in views of the beach, so the ocean isn’t something you visit in one or two rooms, it’s present throughout the entire home, morning to night.
Outside, a heated lap pool extends the concrete language of the home into the landscape, framed by the same Gerringong hills that shaped the block in the first place.
A custom home built for its block, not despite it
Bunker House is a good example of what we mean when we talk about custom luxury home building on the South Coast, it isn’t a template dropped onto a beautiful site. Every major decision we made, from material choice to how far the home sits above ground, was shaped by the block itself: its neighbours, its outlook, its coastal exposure, and the decades we expect it to stand.
